Salsa Unstuffed Cabbage

I stumbled across a recipe like this online and was super excited to try it for something different.  I made it my own with some tweaks and different additions…hence the salsa unstuffed cabbage title.  For starters, I like the “unstuffed” part. That means less work for me.   I was very pleasantly surprised with the results. I will be honest, I searched for a head of cabbage and when I couldn’t find it I just bought 2 bags of shredded plain cabbage.  And guess what..if it is not garden season when we already have cabbage in the garden, I will do it again every single time. (And not feel bad about it!) This was so easy to just mix all of this in my wok and empty the bags in.  It was a huge timesaver when making the recipe as well as cleaning up after.   The bags I purchased had some shredded carrots inside. I liked that addition to the recipe also! Bonus!

What was really exciting was the fact that my 2 1/2 year old loved it!  I did not see that coming. Now, he thought he was eating spaghetti. I did not see any point in correcting him.  My husband however added shredded cheese to his, which I am sure was wonderful. I decided not to go there because I could probably never come back :). It was really good the way it was anyway!

Keep in mind I made a very large amount of this. Feel free to lessen the recipe if needed.

Salsa Unstuffed Cabbage

1.) 2 pounds of ground meat (I used venison)

2.) 1 onion, diced

3.) 2 cans diced tomatoes

4.) 1 pint of salsa

5,) 2-14 oz bags of plain pre shredded cabbage

I used my wok so that I could fit all of the ingredients in one pan (and I cooked it with the lid on). First, brown the ground meat and cook the onions together.  When the meat is browned, add the tomatoes, salsa, and cabbage and simmer until heated through.  Enjoy!

This recipe is 21 day fix compliant!  It only has red and green ingredients (meat and vegetables).  I filled 2 green containers and estimated that it would count as 1 red and 1.5 green. It was a healthy size portion!

  1. Looks yummy!! What size cans of tomatoes?

    • Hello! This is one of our favorites! I usually use just a regular size can (is that somewhere around 14 oz?…I think so). I hope you like it!
